I-71 has reopened in both directions in Clinton County and the lockdown has been lifted after shots were fired in the area. Shiffer was accused of unsuccessfully breaking into the FBI field office in Cincinnati.

Clinton County EMA said there was an armed suspect in the area of SR 73, Smith Road and SR 380. The EMA says all law enforcement response and operations have ended, but part of Smith Road near Van Tress will remain closed as authorities investigate. SR 73 is expected to reopen soon.

This started when that armed suspect tried to breach the Visitor Screening Facility at the FBI office in Sycamore Township at about 9:15 a.m., according to the FBI.

Shiffer took off after an alarm went off and FBI special agents responded.

He drove north onto I-71. An Ohio State Patrol trooper spotted the suspect's white Ford Crown Victoria near the rest stop on I-71 in Warren County and tried to pull over the driver.

Police say Shiffer didn't stop. As the trooper chased his car, OSP said he fired shots.

He then got off on SR 73 and went onto Smith Road almost over the highway where he stopped. Shiffer and officers exchanged gunfire. The trooper wasn't hurt.

Shiffer died from his injuries at the scene around 3:45 p.m. after a five-hour standoff.

FBI Cincinnati released a statement saying, in part, “The FBI is now reviewing this agent-involved shooting. The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under investigation by the FBI’s Inspection Division. The review process is thorough and objective, and is conducted as expeditiously as possible under the circumstances.”
