CHICAGO (CBS/AP) — A body found in the Illinois River near Peru earlier this month has been identified as Illinois State University student Jelani Day, who has been missing since late August.

On Sept. 4, searchers found a body in the Illinois River near the Route 251 Bridge in Peru, not far from where Day’s car was found more than a week earlier. On Friday, authorities confirmed dental records and DNA tests had identified the body as Day’s.

The cause of death is still unknown.

Day was last seen in a Bloomington cannabis dispensary on Aug. 24 near the Illinois State University campus. His abandoned car was found two days later in a wooded area near the Illinois Valley YMCA in Peru, located about 60 miles north of Bloomington in LaSalle County. The YMCA is about two miles from the Illinois River.
