Corpus Christi police arrested a man who they believe stole a marked squad car and crashed it into a light pole Wednesday morning.

Luis Chavarria, 36, was arrested on Thursday and faces charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Chavarria is accused of stealing a police vehicle as the officer helped a stranded motorist in the 1600 block of Agnes Street.

The officer attempted to stop the man and was dragged, Lt. Michael Pena said.  The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The man later struck a light pole in the 1200 block of Agnes, less than half a mile away. The man then fled the area on foot. 

Detectives secured photos of Chavarria walking at the 900 block of Leopard Street around 1 a.m. on Thursday. 

His bond is set at $120,000.
