Upper Allen Police have arrested a man on several charges, including charges for weapons of mass destruction, following a fire at the man’s home where several explosives were found.

The police and Upper Allen Fire Department responded to an apartment complex fire on Geneva Drive in Mechanicsburg at 1 a.m. on May 19. According to police, Jonathan Park caught his bed on fire while making homemade fireworks, which caused the apartment fire as well as Park’s own burn injuries.

Upper Allen Police claim that Park was also in possession of explosives, materials and components that were stored in an unsafe manner, and which could have endangered neighbors if the fire had grown.

The department’s investigation was assisted by the FBI, ATF, the Pennsylvania State Police’s explosives team, staff from the Letterkenny Army Depot, and hazmat teams from Cumberland and Dauphin counties, as well as the Upper Allen Fire Department and Penn State Health Life Lion EMS.

Park was arrested on May 20 with the assistance of the Fairview Township Police Department, and taken to Cumberland County Central Booking for arraignment. He has been held on $10,000 bail, according to documents from the magisterial district judge’s office. Residents who had been evacuated from the area have been allowed to return.
