Investigators believe that the girls were in the tent with Tristan Beaudette when he was shot in the upper chest shortly before 5 a.m. on Friday in Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas.

The girls, who are 2 and 4 years old, were not injured.

Authorities are still trying to determine a motive, and no arrests have been made.

“Words cannot express the absolute devastation and sorrow we feel from the loss of someone so dear to our family,” read a GoFundMe page in a tribute to Beaudette.

The campground will be closed at least through June 28, an official told NBC in California.

Beaudette is survived by his wife Erica and two young daughters. The family was planning to take time off together before relocating to new jobs in the Bay Area.

Anyone with information on the shooting should contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at (323) 890-5500.
