A Dallas police officer has been fired for using what commanders are calling "unnecessary and/or inappropriate force against a citizen."

Police say Sergeant James Bristo, who's been with Dallas Police Department for 34 years, had been under investigation since last year when he was written up for using a dangerous choke-hold on a man he had taken to Parkland Hospital.

Reports say Bristo claims the man "lunged" at a Parkland nurse several times and he was "trying to help."

Nurses orderd Bristo to release the man when the choke-hold became too tight and prevented the man from speaking.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia officially fired Bristo following a hearing on Tuesday.
