The Dayton Police Department introduced its newest K-9 on Friday and named the dog after someone who was near and dear to their hearts.

Dayton police said Officer Jamie Luckoski recently became a new K-9 handler after completing the State of Ohio K-9 training with his K-9 partner, Rio.

Rio was named in honor of fallen Detective Jorge Del Rio. Del Rio died in the line of duty in November after being shot during a federal drug raid. Del Rio was a 30-year veteran of the Dayton Police Department and spent 19 years on a Drug Enforcement Administration task force. He worked undercover most of his career.

The police department said officers wanted to name the K-9 Rio to carry on Detective Rio's name in their department.

K-9 Rio will serve as a dual purpose patrol/narcotics dog, police said.
