Drunken Joliet Driver Crashes Into Oncoming Motorist: Police
JOLIET, IL — A 61-year-old Joliet man who had too much alcohol to drink on New Year's Eve is now lodged in the Will County Jail after crashing into another motorist while driving on Joliet's east side just before 1 a.m., Joliet police reports show.
Joliet police called to the crash scene took Fortunato Ornelas away on charges of aggravated DUI, DUI, and DUI-over .08. Authorities learned of the crash at 12:55 a.m. Sunday, in the 1100 block of Ridgewood Avenue.
According to Joliet police reports:
- The Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Ornelas was eastbound on Ridgewood Avenue and swerved into the westbound lane, striking a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 21-year-old woman from Joliet.
- The impact of this collision forced the Sonata to collide with an unoccupied Nissan Murano parked along the street.
- There were no injuries reported in the collision.
- Ornelas indicated he consumed alcohol prior to driving and performed poorly on field sobriety tests.
- Ornelas had a suspended driver’s license for a prior DUI. Ornelas was also cited for improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured vehicle, driving while license suspended and operating a vehicle when registration suspended for non-insurance.
- The Joliet man's vehicle was towed from the scene.
Ornelas lives close to the crash scene, in the 1500 block of Elgin Avenue. He remained in the Will County Jail Monday night, unable to post 10 percent of his $25,000 bail.
