The family of a security guard who suffered a fatal heart attack working on Mark Zuckerberg's Hawaii property is suing his land management company, Pilaa Land, claiming negligence and wrongful death.

Rodney Medeiros, a retired sugar cane worker, died in August 2019 after suffering a heart attack when leaving his post, located at the bottom of a hill, at the end of his shift, according to Hawaii News Now.

Medeiros usually would take a vehicle up the steep hill, but the vehicle would get stuck during storms, as it was the day of the incident, his family told the outlet. Improvements to the tires on the vehicles could have prevented Medeiros from having to walk up the hill and ultimately prevent his death, the family argued.

The family said it was given a $7,500 check from the Zuckerbergs after Medeiros died. A spokesperson for the Zuckerbergs told the outlet the check was “to help with burial and funeral expenses” but did not comment on the lawsuit.

The Meta founder purchased 750 acres of land in Hawaii in 2014. He has since added 600-acre and 110-acre plots of land to his nearly 1,500-acre estate in the Aloha State.
