Fight over drugs and money leads to shooting in Redding neighborhood

UPDATE, July 8, 8 p.m.: The Redding Police Department has released additional details surrounding the shooting that occurred on Friday afternoon.

REDDING, Calif. — A fight over drugs and money lead to shots being fired in a Redding neighborhood Friday afternoon. A 40-year-old Redding man is currently hospitalized and in stable condition after being shot during the incident.

Redding police responded to a home on the 3500 block of Ricardo Ave. after receiving multiple reports of shots fired. When they arrived, officers found 40-year-old Nicholas Schafer suffering a gunshot to his upper leg. The RPD said he was taken to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition.

The shooter, determined to be 23-year-old Richard Hanna, was found in an apartment on the 1500 block of Azoulay Court and arrested.

After investigating the shooting, the RPD said their detectives learned Hanna met with Schafer trying to get money and drugs from him. However, Schafer refused and the two began fighting each other. During the fight, detectives said Hanna pulled out a pistol and shot Schafer in the leg. 

Ultimately, Hanna was booked into the Shasta County Jail for assault with a firearm and attempted murder.

BREAKING REPORT: 

A suspect has been detained following a shooting in a Redding neighborhood on Friday.

According to the Redding Police Department (RPD), they received a report of shots fired in the area of Ricardo Avenue just before 4:30 p.m.

Officials said one man was shot and has been taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Police learned the suspect was in the area of Victor Avenue and Azoulay Court and brought him into custody.
