Crews battled a deadly house fire in Stonington on Sunday. Firefighters were called to 160 Fifield Road just before 9 a.m. for reports of an explosion at the home.

Emergency crews worked much of the day to contain the fire. A Hancock County Regional Communications Center dispatcher said the home was on a dead-end road, and no other residents needed to evacuate.

Investigators with the Office of the State Fire Marshal found one person dead on the property, and they believe it was the homeowner, 71-year-old David Crutcher. Crutcher lived alone at the house. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner while officials investigate the cause of the fire.

Those nearby said they heard what sounded like an explosion before the flames broke out, then multiple explosions as the fire spread.
