A Washington, D.C. judge on Thursday morning ordered the city employee accused in the shooting death of 13-year-old Karon Blake to be released from jail.

7News' D.C. Bureau Chief Sam Ford learned of the news at Jason Michael Lewis' felony arraignment after an indictment was handed up by a D.C. grand jury last week.

Lewis faces six charges, including second-degree murder, according to court documents.

Prosecutors say the 41-year-old shot and killed the teen in Northeast D.C. on Jan. 7 after Lewis told police he saw Blake possibly trying to break into cars in front of his home. Lewis tells detectives he shot Blake when the teen ran toward him.

Lewis turned himself in on Jan. 31., shortly after charges were filed.

A warrant states that Blake yelled, "I'm a kid, I'm a kid" before collapsing after being shot.

In February, Blake's mother told 7News she hopes Lewis is convicted.

"I really hope that I get justice for my child. I hope he's convicted to the highest. Justice for Karon," Londen Blake said.

In D.C., there is no "stand your ground" law, with current law allowing non-deadly force to protect property. Deadly force may only be used if there is a reasonable fear for your own life or the life of others.

A trial is set for April 2024.
