Former Lake City High School football standout 18-year-old Khalil Fulton died Thursday after possibly drowning at a lake in Independence, Kansas where he was a college student on a football scholarship, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

A news release said just after 11:00 p.m. Thursday, deputies were dispatched to State Lake for a possible drowning.

It said when they got on scene, they found several people near the dock.

Deputies said in speaking with one of the friends of Fulton’s, he did a flip off of the dock.

Witnesses said Fulton “resurfaced after going into the water and went back under once again and never resurfaced a second time,” according to the release.

It said there was no indication Fulton was in distress.

Fulton was pronounced dead at the scene.

The release said foul play is not suspected, but the investigation is ongoing.

Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade said he would like to thank everyone who helped during the search and recovery of Fulton.

“This is a tragic situation where a young man lost his life, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Family,” Sheriff Wade said. Sheriff Wade asks that you respect the privacy of the family as they mourn for this young man who was taken way too soon.”

Lake City High School athletic department released the following statement on its Facebook account:

“With immense sadness, the LCHS Athletic Department mourns the tragic death of Class of 2020 Alumnus Khalil Fulton. Thank you for your effort, spirit, and example of relentlessness to all upcoming Panthers. #44forever #LCstrong”
