A man is facing several charges after deputies say he broke into a home only to be shot by the homeowner.

On Saturday, deputies responded to NW Leonia Way for an attempted break-in at a home, deputies say. The victim shared that they had shot the home invader before he fled.

Nearby, they located Brandon Slywkanycz, 34, of Panama City Beach, deputies say. He was suffering from two gunshot wounds to the upper body and taken to the hospital, where he remains in the custody of deputies.

“People have a right to protect themselves,” stated Sheriff Mark Hunter. “Incidents like this are extremely rare here, but I am glad that this resident was prepared to defend their home and family.”

Slywkanycz is facing charges of attempted home invasion robbery, aggravated assault with a firearm, armed burglary of a structure, grand theft of a firearm, burglary of conveyance and grand theft. He will be booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility following his release from the hospital.
