A Greene County judge has found a Springfield man guilty of first-degree murder for a 2019 shooting at a north-side motel.

Seth Gomez, 21, was convicted of first-degree murder and armed criminal action this week following a bench trial in front of Judge Jason Brown.

Brown determined Gomez was guilty of murdering 29-year-old Calvin Allen Jr. after "cool reflection" on the matter.

Gomez now faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced in July.

According to a news release from the Greene County Prosecutor's Office, Gomez stabbed Allen twice while Allen was laying on a bed at the the Ozark Inn on North Glenstone Avenue.

Then when Allen got up to run away, prosecutors say Gomez shot Allen in the back.

Prosecutors say they presented Judge Brown with evidence that pointed to premeditation like Gomez trying to arrange a getaway driver prior to the killing.

After the shooting, prosecutors say Gomez tried to discourage an eyewitness from coming to court.

Family members say Allen, the victim, was a father of two who had been a standout prep basketball player at Parkview High School.
