A 3-month-old baby died Tuesday at the hospital after his father allegedly kidnapped him, killed his mother and her nephew, then died in a police shootout.

The baby, La’Mello Parker, died around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to WLOX. He was shot by crossfire between Eric Derrell Smith and police officers, but it’s unclear who fired the fatal shot. An autopsy is scheduled.

Smith, 30, fatally shot his ex-girlfriend, Christin Parker, 32, and her nephew, Brandon Parker, 26, around 11:30 a.m. Monday in Baker, Louisiana, according to police.

Eric Derell Smith was killed in a shootout with police.

He then allegedly took off with La’Mello, leading multiple Mississippi law enforcement agencies on a chase near the Louisiana border.

Just outside of Biloxi, Smith and officers exchanged gunfire, according to WLOX. Smith was found dead in the driver’s seat from a non-self inflicted gunshot wound.

La’Mello was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound and died early Tuesday morning.

“Despite the efforts of medical staff, the child passed away as a result of the injuries sustained,” Maj. Chris DeBack of the Biloxi Police Department said in a statement to WLOX.

Two Harrison County Sheriff officers, including a deputy, are on administrative leave pending an investigation, according to WLOX.
