A Mahopac man was arrested on Thursday on charges that he participated in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Anthony Vuksanaj's alleged crimes in Washington, D.C., were revealed after he was arrested in an unrelated robbery case in Westchester County in June, which allowed authorities to see that his cellphone had been present at the Capitol during the riot, court records show.

The FBI took the 52-year-old into custody in Mahopac, a hamlet in the town of Carmel, and he appeared in White Plains federal court on Thursday.

Vuksanaj faces charges of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Washington, D.C.

The FBI said in court records that they identified Vuksanaj as a Capitol riot suspect after he was arrested on June 6 and charged with first-degree robbery in connection with an alleged knifepoint robbery in Mount Vernon that day. No other information on that robbery case was immediately available.

His cellphone was seized by Westchester County police when he was taken into custody on that robbery charge. A search of his phone revealed that on Jan. 6 it had used a cell site that provides service to the grounds and interior of the U.S. Capitol, the FBI said.

A detective who interviewed Vuksanaj for the robbery investigation then identified him as one of the people who was shown on video taken in the Capitol on Jan. 6, a video that the FBI was tipped off about after the riot, according to court records.

Vuksanaj was also allegedly shown in the Capitol on video filmed by a journalist on Jan. 6, as well as on footage from a closed circuit television system inside the building.

Images in court documents allegedly show Vuksanaj taking images with his cellphone in the Capitol, wearing a sweatshirt with "Trump" emblazoned on the front.
