A 21-year-old New Hampshire man has been charged in the murder of a 23-year-old woman who was shot last week in Jackson, authorities said.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's office said Brandon Mitchell was arrested and charged with second-degree murder for causing the death of Esmae Doucette.

Investigators said they were called to Dana Place Apartments on Route 16 in Jackson shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a gunshot injury.

Officers found Doucette suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, and she was transported to Memorial Hospital in North Conway with serious injuries.

Doucette died two days later, on Friday, as a result of those injuries.

An autopsy determined that the cause of Doucette's death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was homicide, the attorney general's office said.

Doucette's family released a statement Sunday saying, "We are devastated by the sudden and shocking death of our radiant daughter and sister. It is an unfathomable loss of a young woman full of warmth and generosity. Esmae had an enthusiastic zest for life and an infectious laugh and was a friend to all who knew her. We want to express our deepest gratitude to the first responders, police, doctors, nurses, Memorial Hospital staff and New England Donor Services for their incredible care and empathy during our darkest hours. We thank our community of Jackson and the greater Mount Washington Valley for wrapping us in love and caring for our girl so well."

On Friday, the Jackson Police Department said Mitchell was arrested on preliminary charges of assault and domestic violence.

"We're not in a position to discuss their specific relationship, we are still investigating all the circumstances that were leading up to this incident," said Assistant Attorney General Scott Chase. "We can say that we believe we have identified all the involved parties regarding that incident, and we will continue to investigate those circumstances."

Police said there was no specific threat to the community on Friday.

Mitchell is currently in police custody and will be arraigned Monday in Carroll County Superior Court.
