A Woodbridge man has been charged after police say a 2-year-old died while riding unrestrained on his lap when his car crashed in July.

On July 29 around 10:40 a.m., police responded to a crash involving four cars on Backlick Road near Barta Road in Springfield. According to the Fairfax County Police Dept., 41-year-old Jamaal Lowery was traveling northbound in a Lincoln Town Car on Backlick Road with the child unrestrained sitting on his lap. As Lowery passed through the intersection at Barta Road, the car drifted toward the center median and struck a traffic signal pole.

Police say the car then continued to travel into oncoming traffic sideswiping a Ford F-150 then colliding head-on with a Ford F-350. The F-350 then rolled backward into a Mercedes GLE 350.

Lowery and the child and the driver of the F-350 were all taken to the hospital with injuries initially considered life-threatening. The child passed away Sunday night, police say. Lowery and the driver of the F-350 were treated and released from the hospital.

Lowery was arrested Thursday and charged with child endangerment, reckless driving, and driving without a license.

He is being held without bond at the Adult Detention Center.

Fairfax police say the identity of the child will not be released per Virginia Code 19.2-11.2 unless parental consent is provided. They also will not provide information on the relationship between the child and Lowery.
