Man critically burned in Des Moines auto shop explosion, fire dies

A man critically injured Wednesday in an explosion and fire at a northeast Des Moines auto shop has died, a spokesperson for the Polk County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.
The man, who sheriff's officials have not yet identified, suffered critical burns about 4:25 p.m. Wednesday at Metro Motors, a car lot and auto shop at 2529 N.E. 46th Ave., the sheriff's office said. The back of the building was still on fire when firefighters arrived and pulled the man from the building.
He was taken to a hospital, where he died Thursday morning, said Polk County sheriff's Lt. Ryan Evans. No other people were in the building at the time of the explosion, the sheriff's office said.
The cause of the explosion and fire remained under investigation.
