Fire crews, police and the Coast Guard all responded and spent around 45 minutes searching before locating the men.

One of the men was brought by rescue boat to Stateline Marina and is believed to be in stable condition.

The second man, later identified as 28-year-old David Castorena, had a major injury to his leg and was not wearing a life vest, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department said.

Castorena was pronounced dead at the scene. Both men were believed to be from the same boat, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department said.

Police believe Castorena was trying to get into an inflatable tube tied to the boat when he was hit by the propeller. Detectives are still investigating the incident.

“This is a tragic situation, and our hearts go out to Mr. Castorena’s family,” said Lt. Shannon Laney, “This incident also serves as a tragic reminder that boating safety is top priority on the water. Wear a life vest, refrain from drinking, and boat responsibly.”

No other details were released.
