Houston police respond to a scene.

Authorities are investigating what happened to a man found dead early Wednesday on a northwest Houston roadway, officials said.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office responded around 3:30 a.m. to the 16900 block of West Little York Road where they found a man lying in the outer lane of the road, said Dashana Cheek-McNeal of the sheriff's office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A neighbor told authorities that she saw a man stumbling around in the street, went to tell her husband and heard a loud noise. When she returned to the window, she saw the man lying in the road and a vehicle driving away from the area.

"At this time we're investigating to see if that vehicle was involved in this death, to see if the male was actually struck by a vehicle or if it is some other type of crime, maybe a homicide," Cheek-McNeal said.

The victim was not identified by Wednesday morning.
