GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A man was shot four times Wednesday night near the area in which a homicide occurred earlier in the day outside the Wealthy Market at Wealthy Street SE and Diamond Avenue SE.

Police showed up at the Spectrum Butterworth Emergency Room at 11:30 p.m. July 15 on a report of the victim being dropped off there, Grand Rapids Police spokesperson Raul Alvarez told MLive Thursday, July 16.

The victim, who shot twice in each hand, gave vague and inconsistent accounts of what occurred, but said he was shot while inside of a vehicle, Alvarez said.

There is no suspect description at this time and it is unknown if the suspect was on foot or in another car.

The victim did state he was hanging out near the Wealthy Market earlier in the night where a vigil was taking place for the 23-year-old man who was shot and killed earlier in the day, Alvarez said.

The fatal shooting happened at around 2:30 p.m. The alleged shooter in that incident called 911 and was taken into custody from a location across the street. Police reported he has been cooperating with the investigation.

Police responded to the scene of the vigil at 9:42 p.m. on the report of between 50 and 60 people fighting, Alvarez said. Upon arrival, there was still a large number of people in the area but they were beginning to disperse.

Officers stayed in the area until the area was crowd was cleared, he said.

While in the area, officers heard shots fired at 10 p.m. in the area of Wealthy Street SE and Eureka Street SE, a little more than a block from the market. Officers located three shell casings in the area, Alvarez said.

A short time later, a resident called from an address in the 800 block of Thomas Street SE to say her vehicle had been hit by gunfire. She had been leaving the area when a vehicle traveling west on Wealthy fired multiple rounds, striking her vehicle three times.

The woman was uninjured, Alvarez said, and it is not believed she was the intended target.

While it’s easy to deduce a connection between the incidents, the investigation hasn’t linked all of them with certainty and the incidents are still being investigated at this time, Alvarez said.

Multiple reports of shots fired were also called in about 1.5 miles to the south in the area of Temple Street SE and Butler Avenue SE later in the night. It is unknown at this time whether those calls are related to the other incidents as well, Alvarez said.

Officers responded to the area at 12:37 a.m. on reports of more than a dozen shots fired from multiple guns and cars fleeing the area, the spokesman reported. Once on scene, they observed a group in front of a home in the 900 block of Temple.

The few people officers spoke to said they didn’t see anything but they heard the shots, Alvarez said. Police later found eight casings and determined a vehicle in front of the home had been struck by gunfire.
