Man suspected of targeting Mexicans in El Paso Walmart shooting pleads guilty to hate crime charges

The man suspected of targeting Mexicans in the 2019 El Paso, Texas, Walmart shooting pleaded guilty to federal hate crime charges.

Patrick Crusius, 24, previously pleaded not guilty to federal charges against him, but he changed his plea Wednesday after federal prosecutors announced they would not be pursuing the death penalty against him, the Associated Press reported.

He is pleading guilty to 90 separate federal hate crime and firearms charges.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT DECLINES TO SEEK DEATH PENALTY FOR 2019 EL PASO WALMART SHOOTER

He is still pleading not guilty to state charges. State prosecutors have stuck with their intention of pursuing the death penalty against him.

Police said Crusius confessed to targeting Mexicans on Aug. 3, 2019, when he entered an El Paso Walmart with an AK-style rifle and killed 23 people.

Shortly before the shooting, he published a manifesto espousing racist views.
