A man and woman were found dead at their home in Ashburn, Virginia, on Tuesday, authorities say.

Deputies went to the townhome in the 20060 block of Old Line Terrace just before 9:30 a.m. after someone reported a man was on fire. They found 45-year-old John N. Ratib Sharmoukh dead in the driveway. The sheriff's office said it appeared he jumped from an upstairs window.

A woman, 31-year-old Mariam A. Farouk Kamal, was found dead inside the house.

At some point, a neighbor saw Sharmoukh was on fire and ran over with a fire extinguisher to try to help.

Kamal and Sharmoukh had three school-age children, authorities said. They were at school at the time of the deaths. Officials are working to help the children.

Neighbors and members of the couple's church could be seen consoling one another outside the home on Tuesday.

Church members told News4 the couple was married and they were originally from Egypt.

“They came to our church this past Sunday. There was no indication whatsoever that such a thing could happen,” Father Thomas Attia of St. Moses Coptic Orthodox Church said through an interpreter.

The sheriff’s office had not been called to the home previously, Sheriff Michael Chapman told reporters.

“We see this as an isolated incident, contained in the home,” he said.
