The unnamed trooper is in stable condition in the hospital.

The suspect was also shot during a struggle between the two and is in serious condition.

Wednesday night the trooper pulled over a Nissan for running a stop sign on 9th Street near Main Street in Niles.

Police say the trooper arrested the driver for a suspended . They say the passenger then got out of the car as the trooper asked.

Once out, police say the passenger and trooper started to struggle and the shots were fired.

It's unclear who fired first or who pulled a gun first.

The names of the trooper and that suspect are not yet released.

We know the trooper is a 3-year veteran of the Niles post.

State police out of Grand Rapids are handling the investigation.

We'll remain on the scene working to learn more.
