NYPD investigates suspicious package near UN, nearby streets closed

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Traffic was closed near the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan Friday afternoon as authorities investigated reports of a suspicious package in the area.

According to police, the package was discovered around 10:45 a.m. outside the Turkish Consulate, located near the UN Headquarters on First Avenue in Turtle Bay.

A police spokesperson described the package as “an Avon box with weird writing” and noted a bouquet of roses was placed on top of it.

Police were still on the scene around 2:30 p.m. to investigate the contents of the package.

Authorities issued a shelter in place order for the consulate, and noted that there was no evacuation.

All traffic on First Avenue, between 42nd and 46th streets, was halted as the investigation continues. Traffic on 46th Street towards First Avenue was also closed.

Police are advising the public to avoid the area and to expect heavy traffic delays.
