Officer shoots pit bull in self defense after being bitten during attack
SAN ANTONIO - A family disturbance call ends with an officer shooting a dog in self defense.
The incident started just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when police were called to the La Quinta Inn off South PanAm Expressway on the South Side.
Police said they received a report that a 17-year-old boy was hitting his father. When they arrived at the room, officers found the door slightly open. When officers pushed the door open to see what was going on, two pit bulls ran out of the room and chased the two officers down. One of the officers was bitten in the lower stomach and his backside. The officer that was attacked shot the dog in self defense.
Shrapnel from the shooting hit the 17-year-old suspect in the ankle, causing superficial wounds. He was treated at the scene. At the time, he was trying to contain the dogs.
The officer was taken to the hospital to have the bite wounds cleaned out.
The teenager was arrested on domestic family related charges.
