NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A photo of British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell with a black eye on her left eye was released by her lawyer on Thursday.

The photo was included in a Manhattan Federal Court filing from Maxwell's lawyer Bobbi Sternheim asking Judge Alison Nathan who is overseeing Maxwell's criminal case to order the Bureau of Prisons to stop shining a light into her cell.

Maxwell's attorney claimed they did not know the cause of the bruising, but noted that it could be linked to her difficulty getting a good night’s sleep due to staff at the Metropolitan Detention Center shining a flashlight into her cell overnight every 15 minutes.

Recently, 59-year-old Maxwell has said she sleeps with a towel or sock placed over her eyes to avoid being disturbed by the light.

According to the letter, Maxwell was "confronted" by guards at the Brooklyn jail on Wednesday night and was threatened to be placed in solitary confinement if she didn't explain the bruise.

“While Ms. Maxwell is unaware of the cause of the bruise, as reported to medical and psych staff, she has grown increasingly reluctant to report information to the guards for fear of retaliation, discipline, and punitive chores. However, there is concern that the bruise may be related to the need for Ms. Maxwell to shield her eyes from the lights projected into her cell throughout the night,” Sternheim wrote.

Maxwell's other attorney, David Oscar Markus hinted that sleep deprivation may have had something to do with the bruise.

“It’s no surprise that she may have been unintentionally injured trying to keep the light out of her eyes at night. She may have been in that stage of half sleep while being tortured with shining lights. Please keep in mind that it’s been 10 months of bad sleep, inedible food, and undrinkable water in solitary confinement. For absolutely no reason. How would you look?” Markus wrote in an email.

Maxwell pleaded not guilty over her alleged role in procuring, grooming, and sex trafficking of underage victims for multimillionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein between 1994 and 2004.

In August 2019, Epstein died by suicide at a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
