SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Police say a young woman is hospitalized after a shooting in Springfield Wednesday morning.

Officers responded around 9 a.m. at the Timbers at Southwinds apartment complex. That is located on South Avenue near Grand and Jefferson.

Police have not yet released the woman’s name, but say she has non-life threatening injuries.

Neighbor Michelle McDowell says there’s been a lot of crime in the neighborhood lately and that’s concerning for her.

”I’m always concerned about safety,” McDowell says.

McDowell says she’s only lived in the area for the last year, but says the neighborhood has been seeing an increase in crime lately.

“I know that for a while it had gotten pretty rough so a lot of people have been looking out for each other the last few months so that’s been really nice,” McDowell says.

Police say they are trying to find witnesses to the shooting.

“We don’t know if anybody saw the event happen but there were several that we are just trying to track down, speak with and find out exactly what they knew,” Lt. Steve Schwind says.

Police have not identified a motive and have not released any information on the suspect yet.

“We don’t know the relationship between those who were involved but somehow they did know each other,” McDowell says.

McDowell says she isn’t sure why this is happening in her neighborhood.

“It’s probably a pick up but I’m also gonna say that SPD’s been doing a lot more patrols so I’m going to say they’re paying attention so that’s good to see,” McDowell says.

McDowell says it comes as a relief, though, to see officers spending more time in the area.

“Having them ride in tandem and being able to ride together and be able to rescue together when there’s other stuff going on so that no one’s out by themselves makes a big difference,” McDowell says.

Police say if anyone has information on this morning’s shooting to call the police department. Information in this case is limited.
