Retired North Vernon Police Department K9 has died

A retired K9 who assisted in numerous drug investigations has died.

The North Vernon Police Department said K9 Heros was trained as a dual purpose patrol dog and could search for narcotic drugs and chase and apprehend fleeing suspects.

During his career, Heros assisted on countless drug investigations, most of which resulted in suspects being charged, officials said.

According to a Facebook post, Heros went to church groups, schools and other public events to show off his skills and greet with curious members of the public.

Heros retired from duty in February 2018, after almost 7 full years on the road.
