WESTWOOD (CBS) – The driver of an RV that crashed into a motel in Westwood has been charged with OUI. It happened at the Budget Inn on Route 1 South Thursday afternoon.

The Westwood Fire Department said the man was alert and conscious when he was pulled from the RV. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and no other reported injuries.

The driver, 63-year-old Richard Robertson of Whitman, was charged with marked lanes violation, operating to endanger and OUI liquor and drugs.

Surveillance video shows the RV traveling south on Route 1 before it veers off the road into the motel parking lot, striking the building near the front office.

“It took a massive hit,” Westwood Fire Chief John Deckers said of the RV. “I’m surprised that he was in the condition that he was when we took him out, that it wasn’t worse. He was blessed.”

Witness Jerome Brown feared the worst. He was in his hotel room just overlooking a busy gas station.

“I heard it first and then felt it,” Brown said. “When I first heard it I thought it was an explosion of some sort, like maybe from the gas station.”

Firefighters had to cut a hole toward the back of the RV. The driver was actually able to climb from his seat, all the way through the mangled vehicle, and to a waiting stretcher. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
