Steve Herrera, 41, was sentenced 52 years in prison after being convicted of abusing a woman repeatedly over two years.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man was sentenced Thursday to 52 years in prison for repeated family violence, according to the Bexar County District Attorney’s office.

Jurors on Tuesday found Steve Herrera, 41, guilty of abusing a woman he was involved with. Evidence presented during Herrera’s trial showed that he had been in a relationship with her for years, with records of him assaulting her dating back to April 2017.

The abuse began while the woman was pregnant and continued to April 2019. The couple’s children witnessed one of the attacks, the DA’s office said in a statement. Herrera continued to harass the victim while he was in custody.

Having been charged as a habitual offender, Herrera faced at least 25 years in prison, and the jury sentenced him to more than twice that minimum.

Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales praised the survivor’s courage in coming forward and telling her story on the stand.

“This jury’s verdict should send a strong message to abusers that the people of Bexar County do not tolerate domestic violence,” he said.
