South Sioux City Police say a man found Tuesday morning with a gunshot wound was shot accidentally.

In an update Wednesday, SSCPD says their investigation has found that the 33-year-old man was shot "by his own actions."

Police say on Tuesday morning, just before 7 a.m., they were notified that MercyOne was treating a 33-year-old man for a gunshot wound.

Police learned that two individuals on their way to work reported finding the victim in the 500 Block of East 20th St., South Sioux City.

They picked up the man and transported him to the hospital, where he was taken to surgery.

Authorities are not releasing his identity at this time.
