Update: This article was updated June 22, 2022, with more information on the deceased.

A teenager is dead after a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the city's south side, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police.

The shooting occurred at about 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16, in the 5500 block of Versailles Drive, near the intersection of South Meridian Street and East Epler Avenue.

The teen was found with a fatal gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified as Terence Plummer III, 18, according to the Marion County Coroner's Office.

A person of interest in the case remained at the location until officers arrived, said IMPD officer William Young. Police do not believe there is an active threat in the area, he said.

Jasmyn Harvey, a resident of the complex since December, arrived home from the gym and a trip downtown to officers investigating the teen's death and crime scene tape blocking off her apartment.

"It's a shocker," Harvey said. "My apartment is right there. I don't want to be here and have something happen where I get hurt. I'm at the ground level. Anything could have come through my window."

Harvey grew up in Indianapolis and said she's aware of the increase in homicides in the city the past couple years. She moved to the south side of the city because she thought it would be safer than other areas, Harvey said.

In 2021, 249 people were killed in criminal homicides, which broke the Indianapolis' criminal homicide record for the second consecutive year.

The city recorded 215 criminal homicides in all of 2020, a figure that shattered the previous record of 159 set in 2018, according to an IndyStar analysis of homicide data.

"I know this can happen anywhere," Harvey said. "It happened right in front of my apartment. Of course, I don't feel safe now. It's scary."
