Davidson County missing teenager Savannah Childress was found during a shooting and chase that ended with the death of the suspect and the injury of an officer in Arkansas Saturday night, Arkansas State Police said.

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation into Childress's disappearance on Feb. 11 after she was reported missing from her residence on Canaan Church Road.

Investigators said they discovered she had been using her Davidson County Schools-issued computer to communicate with multiple people on different online platforms, including one individual who was also talking to other juvenile females in Alamance County.

The Alamance County Sheriff's Office interviewed these girls and found beneficial information about this person, deputies said. The person was identified as William Ice, 38, of Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

Ice removed Savannah from her home on Feb. 11, according to investigators. They identified the red Dodge Durango he was possibly driving.

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office obtained warrants for Ice for first-degree kidnapping and soliciting a child by computer.

Law enforcement partners including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, The FBI, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Marshals and the Pennsylvania State Police, Ice was found to be in the area of a McDonalds in Lonoke County, Arkansas.

At about 8 p.m. Saturday, Lonoke police officers approached the suspect vehicle that contained Ice and Childress, ordering Ice out of the vehicle. Ice stepped out and shot at the officers before re-entering the vehicle and fleeing.

An Arkansas State Trooper already in the area heard the radio call and spotted the suspect vehicle. They pursued it until it became disabled in a snowbank.

Childress exited the vehicle and was secured by the state trooper, law enforcement said. Ice was critically injured inside the vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Ice died at a Little Rock hospital and the officer who was shot is in critical condition, law enforcement said.
