POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Two teens were taken into custody Monday after a reported shooting in the area of Poughkeepsie High School.

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department said the incident happened around 3:15 p.m.

According to witnesses, two people had fled the area on foot toward Daniels Court. Hold in place procedures were initiated by the high school staff.

Officers canvassing the area said they found a vehicle that had been struck multiple times by gunfire.

Two people — a 13-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy — matching descriptions provided by witnesses were found in a rear yard on Daniels Court, police said.

As officers approached them, they tried to flee on foot but were apprehended by officers following a brief chase.

The 13-year-old was found to be in possession of a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun, police said.

He and the 15-year-old were taken to the Juvenile Aid Bureau for investigation.

Officers searching the area with K-9 units found multiple items of evidence, including shell casings.

Police said the 13-year-old was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. He was processed by officers and taken to a secure detention facility.

The investigation is ongoing, authorities said. More information about the teens is being withheld because of their ages.

A second reported shooting happened around 5:40 p.m. Monday in the area of 106 Smith St.

Police said a vehicle had been observed leaving the scene, and shortly afterward, a report was received about a car striking a tree in the area of Dubois Avenue.

The driver of the car was found suffering from head trauma and a gunshot wound to the hand.

The person was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for treatment.

During the investigation, police said officers located two additional people believed to be involved in the incident. They were interviewed by detectives and released pending further investigation.

Poughkeepsie police said both shootings are ongoing investigations. If anyone has information, they should call the confidential tip line at 845-451-4577.
