A man in South Carolina died when he was shot by a deputy after he stabbed a K9 while barricaded in a Spartanburg home, according to officials.

Deputies were serving an outstanding warrant at a home Thursday night on South Carolina Avenue in the Duncan Park neighborhood, according to Cpl. John Burgess with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

According to Burgess, when deputies arrived, the suspect, later identified as Darius L.J. Holcomb, 39, 0f Spartanburg, threatened them with a knife and ran to a bedroom and then barricaded himself inside.

A family was removed from the home and negotiations started, Burgess says.

After no progress, tear gas was placed in the room, Burgess says.

According to Burgess, after the tear gas and negotiations failed, the bedroom was breached.

Officers sent a K9 into the room and he began to stab it, according to Burgess. A Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office representative says the dog's harness took the brunt of the stabs.

At least one deputy fired their weapon, striking Holcomb, Burgess says. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says this deputy has been put on paid administrative leave while SLED conducts its investigation.

Burgess says that Spartanburg Emergency Medical Services was called immediately and responded to the scene.

Holcombe died at the scene.

We reached out to Holcomb's family, who says law enforcement has misrepresented what happened Thursday night, and Holcomb was wrongfully shot and killed. The family spent Friday making funeral arrangements for 39-year-old Holcomb.

Burgess says that the K9 will receive treatment from a veterinarian, and from observation, the K9 will recover.
