A Virginia man was arrested after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers stopped him from bringing his 9mm gun on his flight at Washington Dulles International Airport, according to a release from the TSA Friday.

TSA officers alerted police with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority who seized the gun and arrested the man on state charges Thursday.

Officials say Bentonville, Virginia resident faces a stiff financial penalty for carrying a gun to a TSA checkpoint.

According to the TSA, passengers are permitted to travel with guns in checked bags if they are properly packaged and declared at their airline ticket counter.  Guns must be unloaded, packed in a hard-sided locked case, and packed separately from ammunition.  Additionally, the locked case should be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared.  The TSA has information on how to properly travel with a gun posted on their website

The TSA says gun possession laws vary by state and locality and passengers should do their research to make sure that they are not violating any local gun laws.  Travelers should call their airline because they may have additional requirements for traveling with guns and ammunition.

TSA officials released a list of guns caught at Dulles Airport between 2017 to 2021:
