A 53-year-old woman was found dead after a fire broke out in north Phoenix condominiums early Monday morning, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

The fire broke out in condos located near 29th Street and Greenway Road.

When crews arrived around 5:30 a.m. they found a condo with heavy smoke coming from it. The fire was spreading to surrounding condos, according to Captain Rob McDade of the Phoenix Fire Department.

Firefighters sent into the building for search, rescue and fire attack found a woman inside, they provided life support care on the woman, however, she had already died, McDade said.

The identity of the woman was not released by the Phoenix Fire Department.

A man was treated for minor smoke inhalation and was transported to a hospital as a precaution, McDade said.

The man told fire investigators he lived in the condominium with the woman. He said he woke up to find the home on fire and tried to wake up the woman but was unsuccessful, McDade said.

The man left the home to find the fire extinguisher that was located next to their barbecue grill, McDade said. He then tried to reenter the home but was unsuccessful due to the intensity of the fire.

The fire was contained to the original condominium, but two other homes received smoke damage, McDade said.

Six residents living in nearby homes are temporarily displaced due to smoke damage and the power was shut off by APS, McDade said.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, McDade said, and investigators are on the scene.
