Woman taken to hospital after fire at Shawnee apartment

A woman is in the hospital after a fire Sunday afternoon at the Deerwalk Condos off 58th Terrace in Shawnee.

Authorities said smoke was showing from the top floor of one building when firefighters arrived before 3 p.m.

The fire department said the woman escaped down a fire department ladder. She was treated for smoke inhalation but is expected to be okay.

Authorities say the fire was caused by careless smoking.

The blaze was contained to one unit.
