The Food and Drug Administration should publish its two-year long review of a cancer-causing chemical found in breakfast foods, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.

The chemical, glyphosate, primarily used as a weed killer, was listed as a probable cancer-causing carcinogen by the World Health Organization in 2015.

Low levels of the herbicide is found in popular granolas, instant oats and snack bars, according to a new report by the Environmental Working Group. The FDA has been studying the chemical, and its use, in breakfast foods for the past two years.

“Simply put, the FDA must not only weed out the facts on glyphosate, but they must update the public on their progress,” Schumer said. “I have full confidence in their ability to effectively continue this study, but we are here to send them a message: get going.”

Growers frequently use the pesticide “to protect their products from insects, weeds, fungi, and other pests,” according to the FDA.”
