It was once billed as a young bar with drinks, music and beach volleyball, but after some struggles, it's in the middle of a major makeover thanks to the help of a popular, nationally known TV show.

"We've made a drastic renovation of the place mainly because we wanted to spruce the place up a bit. We've been open for sometime," said Sandbar and Playa Island Bar general manager Kenny Sullivan.

What was once the popular Sandbar on San Mateo Boulevard is now called Playa Island Bar.

"We did the name change mainly to see a little bit of re-branding that will invite some of the old guest back who had bad service and all of that stuff," Sullivan said.

They had some help with the makeover by the popular reality TV show, "Bar Rescue," making Playa Island the first New Mexico bar on the show. Renovations only took a few weeks.

"Everything here is going to be better because we want to give New Mexico what it deserves," Sullivan said.

Not everything has changed. There are still a lot of things that Sandbar had, like the volleyball pit. There are more changes in the works.

"We're going to be doing a lot more renovations here coming soon. Painting, adding a lot more TV's, that way we can throw out pretty much any sport anyone wants to watch," Sullivan said.

As for the name, that's up in the air. Bar leaders said they want the communities opinion on if it should stay or go.

"It doesn't have that standpoint that Sandbar stood for. So, we're playing with it right now," Sullivan said.

Playa Island's episode of "Bar Rescue" is expected to air in November.
