Gold Star Middletown is helping those in Ukraine amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict by raising more than $16,000 to be sent to the Ukrainian border.

The money was raised by Gold Star Middletown's patrons and the Middletown Police Department. The donations were a result of a fundraiser held at the restaurant on May 5.

Gold Star Middletown announced in April that it will donate 50% of all sales to purchase medical supplies and other items that will be utilized in Ukraine.

Inspiration for this fundraiser comes after Stephanie Hall and Annie King, two Middletown sisters who are Ukraine natives, made headlines for traveling to Ukraine to deliver donated supplies in March.

Shortly after hearing of the violence in Ukraine, the two sisters jumped into action by collecting materials. Among those supplies were medicine, masks, toilet paper, more than 50 radios and over 100 Life Straws that allow you to filter your own water. The two then packed the items and personally delivered them to those in need.

After talking to an employee from Ukraine and hearing about Stephanie and Annie’s own heroic act of service to the people of Ukraine, Gold Star Middletown owner Hatem Shteiwi decided it was time for his restaurant to pull together to support them even further.

“When we heard about Stephanie and Annie’s trip to Ukraine last month, we knew they were the perfect partners. At Gold Star, we treat everyone like family – from the people that work here to the community we serve to those who are family of our neighbors, the Ukrainian people included,” Shteiwi said.

In addition to the $16,000 donation, the Middletown community also donated supplies for medical workers and military personnel during the fundraiser.

Gold Star Middletown is continuing to collect supplies and accept donations. They said most needed are triple antibiotic ointment, gauze pads, burn cream, alcohol/disinfectant wipes, and water purification items.

If you'd like to donate, you can visit Gold Star Middletown from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant is located at 449 Oxford State Road.
