Officers with the North Las Vegas Police Department along with the community are grieving the loss of K9 officer Jako.

The department announced the pup's passing on Instagram.

"It is with a heavy heart we post. K9 Jaka [End Of Watch]: 07/01/2020. K9 Jako was a NLVPD Patrol Dog," the caption read. "Due to unfortunate health complications he was laid to rest."

News 3 had previously covered Jako, who, among other incidents, was responsible for taking down a carjacking suspect that had led police on a vehicle pursuit from Henderson to North Las Vegas.

He was a Belgian Malinois and was born on June 30, 2014.

He began working with NLVPD in 2018. On July 1, Jako began to show signs that he was feeling significant pain in his neck.

An MRI was performed and found that he had a large tumor in his spine. The veterinarian treating Jako recommended euthanasia due to the complexity of the tumor, according to NLVPD.

He was humanely put down. A memorial will be held for Jako on July 9.
