Former President Donald Trump leads Vice President Kamala Harris by double digits in a hypothetical 2024 matchup, according to a new poll.

The results of a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey, released to The Hill this week, show Trump poised to exact political revenge on President Joe Biden if the election were held today, though Trump's level of support is smaller compared to a presidential faceoff against Harris.

If Harris were to be at the top of the ticket, 49% of voters said they would support Trump, while 38% said they would back Harris. In a 2020 rematch, Trump prevails with 47% over Biden's 41%. Twelve percent said they were undecided. Biden's job approval came in at 39% in the poll.

Harris would have better luck as the Democratic presidential nominee if she were to compete against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Harris received 40% support, a slim advantage over DeSantis's 38%.

Should Trump decide to run, he is well positioned to take the GOP nomination. The poll found 59% of Republican voters picking Trump. Former Vice President Mike Pence and DeSantis are statistically tied in second place at 11% and 10%, respectively. DeSantis beats Pence 28% to 24% if Trump declines to run.

“I would not give a lot of weight to trial heats right now other than they reflect the weakness of Biden and the administration right now,” said Mark Penn, the co-director of the survey. “That Trump beats them both by a wide margin suggests most Republican nominees once known fully by the public would beat them unless they are able to pivot out of the current nadir in their numbers.”

Pollsters surveyed 1,990 registered voters from March 23-24. The survey, which is a collaboration of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and the Harris Poll, "is an online sample drawn from the Harris Panel and weighted to reflect known demographics. As a representative online sample, it does not report a probability confidence interval," according to The Hill.
