NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks show will return as a live event this year with crowds after the show was “reimagined” last year because of the pandemic.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said it will be the “biggest” Macy’s fireworks show ever and that it will feature Coldplay, Tori Kelly and Reba McEntire.

“This will be the biggest show yet,” de Blasio said at his morning briefing Thursday. “Literally, Macy’s putting together the biggest fireworks display they ever have.”

“And we know last year we had to do it a very different way. It was great, but it wasn’t that same extravaganza we’re used to. This year, back and literally better than ever,” the mayor said.

De Blasio said the fact so many people have been vaccinated will allow the city to have “many, many people in attendance.”

The mayor said there would be dedicated areas for fully vaccinated people and other areas for people who are not vaccinated. He said the NYPD would manage the viewing events.

Will Coss, executive producer of the Macy's fireworks, said more than 65,000 shells and effects will be launched from five barges lining the East River off midtown Manhattan on Sunday, July 4 at 9:25 p.m.

This is a breaking story. Check back for updates.
