California Democrat Maxine Waters caught in new nepotism storm after paying daughter $192,000

Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters is under scrutiny, again, after her daughter received more than $192,000 from her campaign fund to run her 'slate mailer' operation.

Karen Waters earned $192,300 for operating her mother's endorsement mailers between January 2021 and December 2022, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

The practice involves Waters, a popular California Democrat, accepting payments to appear on the mailers, a common practice in the state but notably rare for politicians on a federal level.

Water was cleared to run the operation in 2004, with Karen earning more than $1.2 million since then, as critics continue to call out the apparent nepotism.

According to the campaign filings, Karen is paid management fees about twice a month in payments that range from $2,000 to $6,000.

It was previously reported that Karen received $81,650 in campaign funds in 12 installments from October 23, 2020 through June 17, 2021.

Federal regulations do not prohibit candidates or members of Congress from hiring members of their family for a campaign.

Karen's role in her mother's campaign is to organize the slate mailing operation, where a consulting firm is hired to create a pamphlet that lists candidates or policy measures for each person campaigning for election, and advises voters how to cast their ballots.

This is a normal practice in California, where Waters has reaped the rewards by appearing in mailers with notable state Democrats Vice President Kamala Harris, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon.

Harris first made use of the mailers in 2010 when she dished out $33,00 to Water's campaign in her bid for California Attorney General, and then again paying $30,000 when running for Senate, federal filings show.

Newsom paid Waters' campaign $45,000 when he sought the lieutenant governor position in 2010, and Gascon handed out $36,500 in his 2020 campaign.

Waters' campaign did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com's request for comment.

The congresswoman has repeatedly defended her decision to hire her daughter to run her mailer operation, as well as paying other family members for work on her campaign.

'They do their business and I do mine,' she said when reports about the campaign spending first came out in 2004. 'We are not bad people.'

Along with Karen, Waters' son, Edward Jr., shared in the slate mail proceeds and occasionally worked as a consultant to campaigns Waters backed.
