Sunshine State Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is outshining his speculated 2024 foe, former President Donald Trump, in a hypothetical 2024 matchup against President Joe Biden, a new poll found, furthering his post-midterm momentum.

In a head-to-head matchup with Biden, DeSantis is tied with 42% support, faring stronger than Trump, who lags behind Biden 34% to 44%, a Marquette Law School poll found. Data from the Marquette poll also indicated that DeSantis is topping Trump among registered Republicans 60% to 40% and 65% to 35% among registered voters broadly.

After Republicans were dealt a midterm beating, performing below expectations, public soul-searching has led to a division in the party over Trump among GOP heavyweights.

“Usually those voters are going to want to vote for people that are offering an alternative,” DeSantis explained during a press conference Thursday. “And yet some of those voters throughout the country, not in Florida, but throughout the country … they still didn’t want to vote for some of our candidates.”

His remarks mirrored other top Republicans, some of whom, like former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, directed sharp criticism at Trump, blaming him for elevating low-quality candidates. Trump debuted his 2024 campaign about a week after the lackluster GOP outing and began unleashing scathing attacks on DeSantis, who has polled as his top hypothetical GOP rival.

DeSantis has shown restraint, largely refraining from returning fire on Trump and seemingly positioning himself as a viable alternative to the former president. Despite Trump's broadsides against him, DeSantis touts a 76% favorability rating among respondents amenable to Trump and 51% who are apprehensive of him, according to the Marquette poll.

When asked whether Trump should run in 2024, 55% of Republican-leaning voters said he should, compared to 45% opposed, down from 60% who wanted him to run back in September, the poll found. Meanwhile, a majority of Democratic-leaning voters, 51%, did not want to see Biden run in 2024, compared to 49% in favor.

The poll was conducted from Nov. 15-22 among 1,004 adults nationwide and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points. In prior polls conducted by Marquette, DeSantis lagged behind Biden, as did Trump, but the latest figures from November mark a turning point.

A slew of polls generally show Trump edging out DeSantis in a GOP primary, but some have begun to indicate that the Florida governor is gaining ground or leading in battleground states. DeSantis has been mum about whether he will vie for the presidency in 2024.

In contrast with Republican underperformance in House races across the country, Florida proved to be a bright spot for the GOP, home to smashing victories. DeSantis is slated to release an autobiography next year.
