Kenny Aumack happened to be passing Capitol Diner in Dauphin County when he spotted Dr. Mehmet Oz, Republican U.S. Senate candidate.

“I’m just here for a picture,” said Aumack, of Lindenwold, N.J., as he waited in the diner’s parking lot. “He’s a celebrity.”

Dozens of people showed up Friday at the Swatara Township restaurant to meet the surgeon-turned-daytime talk show star. Oz, who was with his wife, Lisa, chatted with diners, signed red, white and blue “Oz” posters and posed for photographs.

He talked with supporters about inflation, energy and safer streets, among other issues, emphasizing the country needs to move past pettiness and get to the root of its problems. Mostly, Oz said he wanted to hear what Pennsylvanias have to say.

“I’m very optimistic. The more I get out and talk to folks and hear their concerns, the more I know I have the answers they want to hear,” he said.

Friday’s stop comes on the same day Oz’s opponent, U.S. Senate Democratic candidate Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, returns to the campaign trail after a three-month hiatus following a stroke. Fetterman will host a rally this evening in Erie.

Oz has been critical of Fetterman’s absence on the campaign trail and calling him out for “hiding.”

“My opponent won’t campaign, so you have no idea what he thinks, and he frankly probably doesn’t know what you are thinking because he hasn’t been listening the last few months,” Oz said.

Fetterman suffered a stroke on May 13, just four days before the primary, which he still easily won. He later had a pacemaker with a defibrillator implanted because he has cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens heart muscles.

Still, polls including a recent one by Center Street PAC, which describes itself as nonpartisan, shows Fetterman with a 14 point lead over Oz, 52% to 38%. Oz doesn’t seem concerned with numbers and earlier Friday challenged his opponent to five Senate debates this fall.

“I think having the debate is a very wise thing for our democracy. You want to have the candidates talk to each other and talk about issues. What are you actually going to do to alleviate the discomfort felt by a lot of people?” Oz said.

Supporters like Steven DeFrank, a Swatara Township Republican committeeman, said it’s too early to be concerned about poll numbers.

“I don’t always trust the polls because you don’t know who they are talking to,” he said, adding he hopes Oz continues his pattern of meeting face-to-face with voters.

Gina Chiloro, a Susquehanna Township Republican chairwoman, said she didn’t want to miss an opportunity to meet Oz, quipping, “He’s so cute and his wife is gorgeous.” She emphasized Oz’s politics align with her own.

“He doesn’t need this job and that is always critical to me is somebody who has enough money that they aren’t in this to make money,” she said.

During the stop, Oz emphasized he will continue to get the message out and ramp up television ads against Fetterman, who he described as the most radical candidate for U.S. Senate in a competitive race this year.

“They want someone who is a unifier, someone who spent their life giving people the autonomy to own their future. That’s what I’ve done,” Oz said.
